Located on a 300-acre
site, our client asked us to find the 18 best holes the property had
to offer. He was looking for a stern test of golf that would be capable
of challenging the best players in the game. After exploring dozens
of layouts the final routing was selected based upon the variety and
quality of the individual golf holes. Key to gaining project approvals
was the avoidance of any impact to a series of Native American archeological
sites, or masses of native oak trees. A minimalist approach was taken
in the construction of the golf course. Mass grading of the land was
rejected in favor of localized grading to create the tee and green sites.
Native grasses and shrubs were utilized outside the fairways as a means
of maintaining the natural look to the site and conserving water. La
Purisima has hosted numerous amateur championships, the LPGA, and the
PGA TOUR Qualifying School.
